Riyad Mahrez to make first start for Pep Guardiola's side

Pep Guardiola fears Manchester City's attempt to regain the Premier League title could be hampered with the late return of his World Cup stars.

City tried to sign the Italy midfielder from Napoli but he opted for a move to Chelsea.

"For the guy, it would have been a mistake for him and for us if he had chose to come here when he wanted to go with Maurizio and Chelsea".

"So it is important that English football has received an exceptional player and at the end if they want to come, it's better they come".

Although, admittedly, he might benefit from a loan move to a lower calibre Premier League club, he exhibited glimpses of his best last term and it is perceptible why Guardiola wants to hold onto him.

City are still on the hunt for another midfielder and remain linked with Real Madrid's Mateo Kovacic, who has signalled his intention to leave the Spanish capital this summer.

Defender Mendy, who made just one substitute appearance for France during their triumph at Russian Federation 2018, and Portugal midfielder Bernardo Silva are the only members of Guardiola's squad who featured in the World Cup to be included on the trip. We will try and find solution for him.

Guardiola's title-winning squad had 16 players at the tournament in Russian Federation, including England's John Stones and Raheem Sterling, Spain's David Silva, Brazil's Ederson and Gabriel Jesus among others.

'No, we are not disappointed, ' Guardiola said.

Guardiola is prepared for Hart to "stay here" if no acceptable offer materialises. He's training like a young guy of 18 years old.

The Blues boss claims he is used to preparing for title defences without his big players in pre-season and insists they will be ready for kick-off against Arsenal on August 12.

"Over the next 11 days, we will play Borussia Dortmund at Soldier Field in Chicago, Liverpool at New York's MetLife Stadium and Bayern Munich in Miami's Hard Rock Stadium".

"I know it is not easy for him what happened in the last period, but he's with us and tomorrow he's going to play. I can't say why certain decisions were made".

Mahrez, who is one of City's most high profile transfers so far this summer, will be joined in the starting line-up by goalkeeper Joe Hart.
