Trump backs Putin on election meddling

The top Democrats on Capitol Hill responded to President Donald Trump siding with Vladimir Putin over his own intelligence agenices by saying more forcefully the Russian president might have compromising information about him.

"On the so-called interference of Russian Federation in U.S. elections, I reiterated what I said several times".

The 30-minute interview aired hours after President Trump and Putin held a news conference in Helsinki, where Trump repeatedly dismissed us intelligence findings on Russian interference in the 2016 election and criticized special counsel Robert S. Mueller III's probe as "a disaster for our country".

CNN is reporting that that statement wasn't cleared by the White House.

On Friday, the Justice Department laid out details of what it said was a far-reaching hacking scheme in an indictment of 12 Russian agents whom it accused of trying to disrupt the US election.

"Today's press conference in Helsinki was one of the most disgraceful performances by an American president in memory". It should always be the goal of US presidents to improve relations with other countries, especially ones as large and strategically important as Russian Federation.

Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., called it "bizarre." Sen. He just said it's not Russian Federation.

Their criticism followed Trump's claim that the FBI's investigation into Russian Federation had been "a disaster for our country".

"He offered to have the people working on the case come and work with their investigators with respect to the 12 people", Trump told reporters during a news conference in Helsinki following his joint summit with Putin.

"This is shameful", said Senator Jeff Flake, a fellow Republican and staunch critic of the president.

"We need our Republican colleagues to stand up for the good of this country", he said. Key GOP lawmakers at least initially refrained from directly attacking Trump's performance, and at least one echoed the president's criticism of the special counsel probe.

"There is no moral equivalence between the United States and Russian Federation, which remains hostile to our most basic values and ideals", he said.

Browder, who recently called Putin a "pipsqueak" on "Countdown to the Closing Bell," said the Russian president has so much disdain toward the Magnitsky Act that it has propelled him to insert Browder as part of the conversation with the leader of the free world.

Monday's firestorm erupted when Trump, standing side by side with Putin in Helsinki, refused to say he believed that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election, or to publicly condemn it.

Casey, D-Scranton, said that Trump attacked and diminished law enforcement and intelligence agencies during the news conference and did so on foreign soil and in front of a "hostile dictator".

Trump said he'd give it to his 12-year-old son Barron, a football fan.

Coat's predecessor, James Clapper, called Trump's acquiescence to Putin "an incredible capitulation", while former Central Intelligence Agency chief John Brennan labelled it "nothing short of treasonous".

Casey added, "Instead of holding Vladimir Putin accountable in Helsinki, President Trump embraced him and in doing so diminished America's standing in the global community and shamed the office of the presidency".

"It was nothing short of treasonous".

Democrats across the board slammed Trump for his comments in Helsinki. He just said it's not Russian Federation.

Putin told Wallace he was optimistic that he and Trump could forge a better diplomatic relationship after Monday's meeting, and reach consensus on issues like the denuclearization of North Korea and the START treaty, which is set to expire in 2021.
