Giuliani: Trump Asked Comey To Give Michael Flynn 'A Break'

Donald Trump is still considering an interview in special counsel Robert Mueller's inquiry into Russian influence in the 2016 presidential election, but is concerned about what he sees as a "corrupt" and "tainted" investigation, the president's lead attorney said.

In a recent interview with ABC's George Stephanopoulos, Cohen said his loyalty was to his family and country above President Trump. The FBI raided his home, his office, and his hotel room in April, seizing roughly 4 million documents. "We have - we have no reason to believe he did anything wrong". During a May 2017 news conference, Trump said when asked if he had urged Comey to ease up on the Flynn investigation, "no, no", and then said, "next question". He said Mueller is not now insisting on an interview with Mr. Trump.

Stephanopoulos said he asked Cohen repeatedly if he was considering cooperating with prosecutors in their investigation. DOJ Inspector General Michael Horowitz has said he is investigating whether Strzok's bias may have influenced the launch of the Russian Federation probe. "I would love to", the president said in May.

A tweet from Davis on Monday implies that Guiliani wasn't talking about the actual truth, but a version of the story that would benefit the president, and that neither Trump nor Guiliani have what could be called a close relationship with "truth" by any definition.

But some analysts have drawn comparisons between Cohen's story and that of former Trump aide Michael Flynn, who was charged by Mueller's team previous year.

The new demands by Trump's legal team indicate that it is likely to take a more aggressive and combative stance toward Mueller going forward.

Mr. Trump has denied any collusion and obstructing justice, deriding the probe as a "witch hunt". He also signaled a willingness to cooperate with federal prosecutors, even if what he tells them or special counsel Robert Mueller, could imperil the president.

"The reality is that there are biases that have to be explored surrounding Mueller", Giuliani said.

He said that the president would not agree to be interviewed as part of the Mueller probe unless the special counsel "can satisfy us that there's some basis for this investigation". Kasowitz and Trump lawyer Jay Sekulow did not immediately return messages, and former Trump attorney John Dowd declined to comment.

On ABC's "This Week" on Sunday, Giuliani stressed that he wasn't anxious about testimony that Cohen might give. "Michael's not going to lie, he's going to tell the truth, and as long as he does that we have nothing to fear", Giuliani said.
