It is not hard to imagine the reasons why Samsung is expected to experience a awful quarter, because according to analysts, the reason for the drop in profit is lackluster Galaxy S9 sales.

Sales are estimated at 58 trillion won, down 4.9 percent from 61 trillion won a year earlier.

The Korean electronics giant said Thursday that it expects to record an operating profit of 14.8 trillion Korean won ($13.2 billion) for the three-month period ended June 30, an increase of 5 percent over the year-ago-period.

This is expected to be a drag on profit growth when the Korean conglomerate posts second quarter earnings on Friday.

Weak LCD display prices are also blamed for the disappointing results, they said.

If the news is accurate, it'd be a far cry from the 210mAh flexible cell design that the Samsung SDI subsidiary came up with four years ago. But as early as now, analysts are viewing its second quarter performance as the first decrease in seven quarters.

Samsung is expected to launch the Galaxy S10 in February 2019.

Still, CES is another six months away, so there's even more time for things to change - especially if Samsung has issues manufacturing the Galaxy X. The device will employ foldable display panels, which is expected to go into mass production this summer.

The report suggests that the Galaxy X will pack a large battery setup. I am eager to make foldable phones because their impact on the industry will be very big.

Samsung has since acknowledged its plan to expand its smartphone portfolio.

Samsung hopes its foldable phone would improve its profit.
