Japan beat 10-man Colombia

The first red card of the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russian Federation belongs to Colombia.

Their star player is undoubtedly former Manchester United midfielder, Shinji Kagawa. Shinji Kagawa remains a big name but he hasn't had the brightest time and Japan are lacking in attacking options up front.

Yuya Osako restored Japan's lead in the 73rd minute, heading past David Ospina from a corner.

Colombia conceded a penalty and had a man sent off inside three minutes, with Carlos Sanchez dismissed for handling Shinji Kagawa's shot at a goal left exposed by bad defending.

Colombia soundly defeated Japan 4-1 when the sides met in group play in Brazil four years ago, and the Japanese also began the game without Okazaki, a Leicester forward who has been trying to overcome a sore calf and was replaced in the starting lineup by Osako.

Japan wasn't going to be an easy win for Colombia in Group H of the World Cup.

Los Cafeteros were made to suffer by their opponents in the second half, however, and having endured the toughest of starts Falcao and Co now have to ponder their approach to their next two matches.

Sanchez became the first player to get a red card in the Russian Federation 2018 World Cup on Tuesday. Over the last two World Cups, only three teams have advanced to the knockout stage after losing the opener, so relying on others with draws is a risky proposition.

Shinji Kagawa got the Samurai Blue off to a dream start when he converted a penalty after six minutes, but a Juan Quintero freekick saw Colombia pull level six minutes before the break.

Hiroki Sakai then had a shot blocked out for a corner which Osako rose above Santiago Arias to head in off the right post to settle things, silencing the overwhelming Colombian crowd.

Another video review led to a penalty at the World Cup, this time helping Sweden beat South Korea 1-0 Monday.

His sending-off in the third minute, for a deliberate handball, was the second fastest in World Cup history after Uruguay's Jose Batista was dismissed after 55 seconds against Scotland in 1986.

While Carlos Sanchez took the fall, namesake Davinson was equally at fault as he allowed a ball over the top to bounce in the build-up to the penalty incident, giving Osaka a chance to shoot and Kagawa the opportunity to pounce on the follow-up.
