Malaysia’s new PM scraps Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail

"The terms and agreement for the HSR are such that if we decide to drop the project, it would cost us a lot of money", he said.

On May 12, the Malaysian government's delivery vehicle for the high-speed project, MyHSR, released a statement congratulating Mahathir Mohamad on being sworn in as the country's seventh prime minister.

Dr Mahathir said action will be taken against the EC and its chairman Datuk Seri Mohd Hashim Abdullah if there is evidence of wrongdoings.

Dr Mahathir had previously described the HSR project, which he valued at RM110 billion, as being "unnecessary and will not earn the country a single sen".

A spokesperson added: "We look forward to further developing the Kuala Lumpur-Singapore high-speed rail under the new Malaysian Government as an opportunity to accelerate inclusive growth and maximise socio-economic benefits for the seven cities along the [high-speed rail] corridor as well as improve living standards for all Malaysians".

"He has to show proof (that the cancellation of the HSR project) is a mistake", he said.

Mahathir says the 350-kilometer (218-mile) rail project is too costly and that Malaysia "will make no money at all from this operation".

Meanwhile, Mahathir also said that he has not informed Singapore formally of the cancellation of the project but assured that they will be informed.

"It is a final decision, but it will take time because we have an agreement with Singapore", Mahathir said.

What's pushing Chinese high-speed train projects off the rails overseas?

Rahman said Malaysia would lose an estimated RM209 billion in gross national income (GNI) contribution and also the potential to create 70,000 jobs if the HSR was canceled.

Najib said at the time: "One can have breakfast in Kuala Lumpur, lunch in Singapore, and be back in time for dinner in Kuala Lumpur".

On top of that, the prime minister announced that while the Goods and Services Tax (GST) will be officially abolished on 1st June this year, the Sales and Services Tax (SST) will be implemented on 1st September 2018. Breaking the BN's six-decade long monopoly, Mahathir beat his one-time protégé Najib Razak and became the world's oldest head of government.
