South Florida sees dry patches, but Alberto could still bring heavy rain

Florida, Alabama and MS declared states of emergency on Saturday as the storm threatened up to 12 inches of rain over the Memorial Day weekend, as well as tidal surges and damaging winds, according to Patrick Burke of the weather service's Weather Prediction Center in College Park, Maryland.

Alberto - the first named storm of the 2018 hurricane season that officially starts June 1 - is expected to strengthen until it reaches the northern Gulf Coast, likely on Monday night.

Subtropical Storm Alberto has picked up speed, bringing rain along with the system's predicted path up through the Gulf of Mexico.

Forecasters say 2 inches (5 centimeters) of rain is expected on saturated ground with isolated areas getting up to 4 inches (10 centimeters) of rain. On Saturday evening, a wind gust of 47 miles per hour was reported by the National Weather Service in Key West, Florida.

Coastal areas could also experience 2 to 4 feet of storm surge.

Tuesday into Wednesday is now looking like our best chance to see direct effects from Subtropical Storm Alberto.

According to an update from the NHC, the center of the storm is predicted to reach warning areas on the U.S. Gulf Coast Sunday night or early Monday, but heavy rainfall and tropical storm conditions will reach the area ahead of the storm's center.

All 67 Florida counties were issued the emergency notice to give state and local governments enough time and resources to prepare, Florida Governor Rick Scott said in a statement.

Water, not wind, tends to be the deadliest factor in storms like Alberto, according to a 2014 study by Dr. Ed Rappaport of the National Weather Service. Its top sustained winds were 40 miles per hour (65 kph).

TORNADOES: A couple of brief tornadoes are possible on Monday across much of Florida into central and southern Georgia, southern SC, and southeastern Alabama. Elsewhere, for the Piedmont and most of the Triad, expect partly sunny skies and muggy conditions with highs in the low to mid 80s.

"Just another day of living in Florida, hurricane season starting up here soon", Kissimmee resident Nelson Humphrey said.

But where and when the storm will make landfall depends on when the storm makes a northwest turn in the central Gulf of Mexico.

"Swells from Alberto will create unsafe surf and rip currents along the Gulf Coast", the National Weather Service said. Flooding and flash flooding are possible in the southeast United States, including Florida. We are surrounded by corridors of moisture and tropical downpours, however, so the improved weather is not expected to last.

A Storm Surge Watch means there is a possibility of life-threatening inundation, from rising water moving inland from the coastline, in the indicated locations.

At 11 p.m. EDT Saturday, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said Alberto was about 400 miles (645 kilometers) south of Apalachicola, Florida, and moving north-northeast at 13 mph (20 kph).
