Former Mexican President Vicente Fox Blasts Trump Over 'Animals' Comment

No stranger to controversy for his hardline anti-immigration comments, Trump stoked new fury Wednesday when he made the remark to a group of California Republicans visiting the White House, during a discussion on his planned border wall. "You wouldn´t believe how bad these people are, these aren´t people, these are animals and we´re taking them out of the country".

Answering a reporter's question during a meeting with North Atlantic Treaty Organisation secretary-general Jens Stoltenberg, Trump said his comment a day earlier had clearly been directed at members of the MS-13 gang.

CNBC correspondent and John Podesta superfan John Harwood's objected to Trump's statement, contending that "MS-13 gang members are human beings [in my humble opinion]". Local officials reacted with glee, arguing that California makes it more hard for their communities to deport criminals-the state's existing law, said Sheriff Margaret Mims, prevents authorities from being able to use her databases "to find the bad guys", and stops her from accessing prisons to locate people who might be in the country illegally.

"If the media and liberals want to defend MS-13, they're more than welcome to", White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders told reporters. She added that thought "the term animal doesn't go far enough".

Mexico, which has bristled at being on the receiving end of some of Trump's harshest rhetoric, condemned the comment. "I'm actually surprised you're asking this question".

A day earlier, Trump sparked criticism when he used the term during a meeting with California officials opposed to the state's "sanctuary city" policy.

"MS-13, these are animals coming onto our country". Meanwhile, The Washington Post went further and described the reference as evoking "an ugly history of dehumanization" despite correctly including the MS-13 reference in the transcript.

Ernest Marshall, another CNN contributor, attacked Trump based on the false meme that the President called white supremacists in Charlottesville "very fine people".

"It took an animal to stab a man a hundred times and decapitate him and rip his heart out". "Frankly, I don't think the term the president used is strong enough".

The local officials invited for the event took turns praising his immigration policies and lamenting California's law, arguing that it was making it more hard for their communities to find and deport criminals. "And it took an animal to kidnap, drug and rape a 14-year old Houston girl", Sanders said. This one, though, might be less about the President Donald Trump's words or deeds and more about our collective assumption that when in doubt, he has done or said something wrong.
