Senate Will Vote to Reinstate Net Neutrality Protections

A petition related to net neutrality with 32 signatures was delivered on Wednesday, thereby forcing a vote on the Senate floor. Basically, net neutrality was made to keep the internet equal - and prohibited prohibiting internet providers from blocking or throttling access to the web.

FCC chairman Ajit Pai announced that the order will be in full effect from June 11, officially superseding the Open Internet Order of 2015 and removing Title II utility classification from internet service providers as designated by the Communications Act of 1934. Ed Markey (D-MA) filed a discharge petition yesterday under the Congressional Review Act, shifting the decision from the FCC to a vote between the Senate which is expected to take place next week. The audio is below. John McCain (R-Ariz.) due to illness, Democrats now think they would prevail on a 50-49 vote.

Proponents now have the backing of 47 Democrats and the two independents who caucus with Democrats, as well as Republican Senator Susan Collins.

If the measure is passed by a simple majority vote, it would still need to be signed by President Donald Trump.

But the Federal Communication Commission's (FCC) vote to end those protections threatens to change the way we communicate with each other, how companies do business, how consumers buy goods, and even how we educate our kids.

"We are now one step away from allowing the American public to see where their elected officials stand on protecting their internet service".

Democrats said that was a mistake and are trying to take advantage of what they said is net neutrality's broad public support to make Republicans pay at the polls in November's midterm elections.

Other Republicans and conservative activists who oppose the net neutrality regulations as heavy-handed government oversight have branded the effort a political stunt.

In the run up to the net neutrality vote, people across the country will be bringing the "red alert" protest offline and directly to their representative's doorsteps.

In February, a coalition of 22 state attorneys general refiled legal challenges meant to block the Trump administration's repeal of net neutrality. "Even if Trump vetoes it, it will set a tone for any future congressional fights to come and beat back attempts by ISPs to push watered down legislation that undermines net neutrality while claiming to save it". And yeah, your Internet in the United States might not be so free in the future.

She also noted that if the resolution passes in the Senate, House members who have yet to "show their cards" on the issue may feel compelled to do so. As Gizmodo reported late a year ago, "Notably, this effort to push a resolution of disapproval is separate from those seeking a permanent legislative solution to enshrine net neutrality protections under federal law". "There's no more pretending to be for Net Neutrality or proposing fake compromises". The industry group USTelecom said Wednesday that Markey's motion "will not protect the open and vibrant internet we all want and consumers expect".
