Germany's Merkel sees chance for electric auto battery production in Europe

Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has said he might have to renounce his German citizenship over Chancellor Angela Merkel's decision to allow more than one million migrants into Germany.

Publication of Arab News draws attention to the fact that Rouhani made no mention of night shelling by Iranian forces on Israeli territory and the Israeli response to the rocket fire.

Europe can no longer rely on the U.S. for military protection, German leader Angela Merkel said on Thursday as the continent's leaders absorb the shock dealt by the Trump administration's decision to quit the Iran nuclear deal.

Mr Macron echoed Mrs Merkel's criticisms of the U.S. decision to leave the nuclear deal and said that Europe should show greater unity and strength to become the main guarantor of stability in the Middle East.

Using the occasion of an award ceremony in Aachen where he received the prestigious Charlemagne prize for efforts in boosting European Union integration and cohesion, Macron made an impassioned plea to Merkel to take swift action. The German leader also called for talks to be held in a broader format on Iran's ballistic missile program and its regional activities in Syria, Yemen and elsewhere.

Merkel's Christian Democratic Union is divided on how to deal with Macron's proposals, and the Social Democrats are too weak to act on their supposed support for the French president's ideas. European leaders and key trading power China have vowed to save the 2015 accord, which lifted sanctions on Iran in return for it halting an alleged nuclear weapons programme and allowing worldwide inspections. Instead, Europe has to take its destiny into its own hands. "Rather, Europe needs to take its fate into its own hands". However, it stressed that no part of the 2015 agreement is up for negotiation. "That's the task for the future".

Macron, who received the Charlemagne award at Thursday's event, echoed many of Merkel's points in pushing for a European foreign and defense policy.

Macron mirrored the German leader's concerns when he spoke, saying European countries must no longer let "other major powers, including allies" to determine their "diplomacy [and] security". "We chose to build peace in Middle East: or powers [in reference to US] have not kept ir word", he noted, aware that Europe plays a very secondary role in Syria. "In particular, this means that we must do everything we can to finally achieve a lasting political solution to the Syrian conflict - to end the suffering of the Syrian people, but also so as not to jeopardize stability in the entire region".
