Amazon to employ 3000 people at new Vancouver facility

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh called the expansion "great news" for the city.

The technology giant is expanding its team focused on Alexa and Audible, opening an office in Boston's Seaport. Even without large subsidies, Amazon's second headquarters would drive up the already high cost of housing in Boston, overburden crowded roads and rail lines, and gobble up scarce labor, some critics worry.

Amazon's Development Centre will occupy 416,000 square feet of The Post's 1.13 million square feet redevelopment project, slated to open in 2022. Those jobs will be in fields including machine learning, speech science, cloud computer, and robotics engineering. Since Donald Trump became president with the pledge to create thousands of new jobs, US companies have been eager to tout hiring plans even if they've been previously announced. And on top of Monday's announcement, in November previous year, Amazon announced it would be expanding into another downtown site on Dunsmuir Street, which will open in 2020. More than 6,000 people now work for Amazon in Canada, including 1,000 researchers and engineers in Vancouver at several sites.

The company now has about 1,200 workers in the city, according to Rohit Prasad, a Boston-based vice president and head scientist of Amazon Alexa. "We are home to the fastest growing, most resilient and greenest economy in Canada and Amazon's major expansion in our city means more long-term jobs for people who want to live, work and build a future in Vancouver".

Amazon, which employs more than 1,000 people in Vancouver, in November announced a lease that, from 2020, would give the company space for an additional 2,000 workers.

Prime Minister Trudeau was also in attendance and said there are many reasons why industry giants such as Amazon choose to settle and grow in Canada. Amazon said it expects to grow to 5,000 corporate employees in Vancouver in the coming years.
