At least one killed after building burns down in Sao Paulo

A few hours later, as flames engulfed the building of at least 20 stories, it collapsed.

Early reports state that the majority of those calling the building home ending up safely escaping the fire, which started on the building's fourth floor. The blaze is thought to have been started by a gas explosion, the BBC said.

A large blaze lights up downtown Sao Paulo after a 26-storey block of flats caught fire and collapsed late in the night.

There is no official information on the number of missing persons or on the identity of the one confirmed victim.

Some 50 families had moved into the building after the Federal Police Force, which had been using it, vacated some years ago.

Capt Marcos Palumbo of the São Paulo fire brigade said that modifications made by the residents had allowed the fire to spread more quickly.

Franca said about 150 buildings in the region were occupied by organised groups of squatters, who have pressured the government for years to provide housing for the city's homeless.

The governor said it was legally hard to force people to evacuate the old and decaying buildings.

Firefighter Lt. Andre Elias told Globo TV that at least one person had been killed in the collapse.

Not everybody agreed with the former mayor's tactics, though, and others hoped to see the area converted to affordable housing instead of a robust economic showcase.

São Paulo Governor Márcio França said the building was an accident waiting to happen but that its residents had resisted leaving.
