Inspirational Shaquem Griffin selected by Seattle in fifth round

Shaquem Griffin has become the first one-handed American football player in history to be picked by an NFL team.

Griffin had his left hand surgically removed when he was just four years old as he had been born with a condition that prevented the fingers on his hand from developing. "I think I was more scared of him tackling me in the bathroom and not knowing what was happening than anything".

His play, evidently, impressed the Seahawks enough to make him a fifth round selection - a spot in which players are nearly certain to make their team's roster. I get to play alongside my brother and it's a blessing. They became stars at Central Florida, Shaquill entering the draft last year while Shaquem returned for his senior year.

Wonderful stuff. Best of all, Griffin will reunite with his brother Shaquill with the Seahawks.

"I couldn't breathe", Griffin told ESPN as he described the moment the Seahawks called to say they wanted him. "It was tough - I'm not going to lie to you - seeing all those guys picked in front of me".

I don't know if I've ever been in a more inspirational interview that we do at the combine than that one.

Shaquem [pronounced Shah-keem] Griffin returned to the AT&T Stadium stage, donned a Seahawks cap, and drew lengthy cheers from fans as he shook hands and high-fived others.

I hope I am an inspiration for people, to see I can do whatever I want.

"I'm glad they made this happen", the elder of the twins continued.

Griffin also bench-pressed 225 pounds 20 times, three more than his twin had managed, having attached a prosthetic hand onto the bar, with current National Football League defensive stars JJ Watt and Von Miller among those to react in awe on social media.

"He was just so expressive and so open to tell his story and tell what this opportunity meant to him in a way that moved us all", Carroll said. Griffin, on the Seahawks defense, will be joined by his twin brother, Shaquill Griffin, a second-year cornerback for the team. "Even though I've been doubted so long, it was always triggered in me to just do it and to prove all of them wrong".
