Canelo Alvarez suspended from boxing for six months

The hearing panel voted to hand down a one-year ban, reduced to six months because Alvarez had cooperated with their investigation.

The two middleweight megastars were due to collide in Las Vegas on Cinco de Mayo, eight months on from a first meeting that ended in a controversial draw.

The 27-year-old had blamed the failed tests on eating contaminated meat in his native Mexico and insisted he was the victim of a mistake.

However, the fight was called off after Canelo withdrew earlier this month following a formal complaint filed against him by the Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) after two failed drug tests for clenbuterol in February.

The soonest Alvarez (49-1-2) can fight again is August 17.

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs), from Karaganda, Kazakhstan, boxing's longest-reigning world champion, returns to the ring, Saturday, May 5, against two-time world title challenger VANES "THE NIGHTMARE " MARTIROSYAN (36-3-1, 21 KOs), from Glendale, Calif. Best of all, he is ready and wants the fight. Loeffler acknowledged the letter from the IBF and told ESPN that Golovkin plans to fight May 5 and said their side will seek an exception, adding that he hopes the IBF will grant one. Though the fight is not official, Golovkin's promoter Tom Loeffler and Martirosyan's promoter Don King are reportedly close to finalizing a deal while the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC), WBA and WBC have all sanctioned the fight.

"Martirosyan is an experienced fighter who has faced and defeated important fighters".

He would have been ineligible to compete for a year, but the ban was reduced because he cooperated with the investigation.

But with Alvarez suspended there was too little time between the hearing and the fight do promoters made a decision to cancel the bout. Although most professional sports, worldwide anti-doping agencies and United States boxing commissions treat meat contamination differently from other positive tests, Nevada does not.

Any rematch between Alvarez and Golovkin will be tinged with animosity.
