Kentucky governor apologises for saying teacher strike led to sexual assaults

In a rare off-the-cuff interview with reporters in Frankfort on Friday evening, Gov. Matt Bevin (R-Kentucky) said teachers who called in sick to protest put children's lives in danger. "I guarantee you today a child was physically harmed or ingested poison because they were home alone because a single parent didn't have money to take care of them", he said, adding that "some we introduced to drugs for the first time because they were vulnerable and left alone".

Governor Bevin voiced his frustrations for what he believes is a disregard for what is best for children.

Following widespread outrage over those remarks, Bevin has issued an apology, stating it wasn't his intent to hurt anyone.

"I apologize for those who have been hurt by the things that were said".

"I apologize for those who have been hurt by the things that were said.it was not my intent".

"Clearly a tremendous number of people did not fully appreciate what it was that I was communicating or what it was that I was trying to say", Bevin said.

Bevin has been Kentucky's governor since 2015.

"I am grateful for Secretary Heiner's skilled and selfless leadership of the Education and Workforce Development Cabinet over these past two and a half years", Bevin said in a statement.

On Saturday, one day after the teachers' one-day strike, the Republican-led Kentucky House swiftly approved two resolutions condemning Bevin's comments in a sharp bipartisan rebuke.

Bevin's controversial comments Friday came as thousands of teachers demonstrated at the state Capitol in Frankfort, demanding that lawmakers override the governor's veto of key bills, including reforms to the tax code, and a $22 billion state budget with record new spending on public education, which teachers' groups say is crucial.

Stamper, who previously was spokeswoman for the Bevin administration, now is public relations director at Anthem Inc. "Let's work together, we need to work together", he said.

"The disgusting comments by Gov. Bevin insinuating that a peaceful protest by teachers would lead to sexual assault are reprehensible".

Bevin said some people misunderstood his words.

House Democratic Leader Rocky Adkins said Sunday that Bevin still doesn't get it.

Democrat Rep. James Kay of Versailles didn't hold back any sarcasm about Bevin's apology, either.

Schools shut down across the state Friday as teachers protested for additional education funding and against recent changes to the state's pension system. "His contempt and disrespect for teachers and public employees is noted and his enablers are on the list".
