Majority of Americans say something like the Holocaust could happen again

On Yom HaShoah, or Holocaust Remembrance Day, and during this week of remembrance, we reflect on one of the darkest periods in the history of the world and honor the victims of Nazi persecution. Fifty-eight percent of respondents said they believe something like the Holocaust could happen again. Two-thirds of Millennials (66%) had no idea what Auschwitz was. Ninety-three percent of the respondents said that all students should learn about the Holocaust in school and 80 percent said it was important to educate about the Holocaust to prevent it from happening again. Yet education about the atrocities committed and the places they occurred are absent from many Americans understanding about this period of history, the survey found.

The Holocaust Knowledge and Awareness Study, released on Holocaust Remembrance Day, found that many USA adults lack basic knowledge of the events that occurred during the Holocaust-and that the lack of Holocaust knowledge was more pronounced among American Millennials ages 18 to 34. Forty-nine percent of millennials were unable to name a single concentration camp or ghetto, compared to 45 percent of all adults.

It found that there were significant age gaps in knowledge about the Holocaust, with 22 percent of millennials saying they haven't heard or were not sure if they have heard of the Holocaust, compared to 11 percent for all US adults.

The statement continued: "By the end, the Nazis and their conspirators had murdered 6 million men, women, and children, simply because they were Jews".

The survey, which was commissioned by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany (also known as the Claims Conference), found that many Americans were unaware of basic facts about the Holocaust.

In Poland on Thursday, thousands of young Jews from around the world are set to march from the Auschwitz to Birkenau death camps in Poland on Thursday to commemorate the 6 million Jews killed in the Holocaust.

The study was conducted February 23-27 by Schoen Consulting. Sixty-eight percent of USA adults said antisemitism exists today and 34 percent said there are many neo-Nazis now present in the U.S.

Most US Adults (84%) know that the Holocaust occurred in Germany, the study determined, yet just 37% identified Poland as a country where the Holocaust occurred.

"On the occasion of Yom HaShoah, it is vital to open a dialogue on the state of Holocaust awareness so that the lessons learned inform the next generation". "There remain troubling gaps in Holocaust awareness while survivors are still with us; imagine when there are no longer survivors here to tell their stories".

"We say 'Never Forget, ' but the people who were murdered are literally being forgotten as we speak", Greg Schneider, executive vice president of the Claims Conference, tells Lily Rothman of TIME.
