'Nanny state full of PC snowflakes' - Sugar tax sparks anger

In a fantastic news for health campaigners, the UK's first ever sugar tax comes into force today.

In 2014 Mexico also introduced a sugar tax levy on soft drinks.

The new levy, which was announced in March 2016, will add £0.18 per litre on drinks containing 5g or more of sugar per 100ml, and £0.24 per litre on drinks containing 8g or more. Lastly, an expected revenue of £240m ($340) is expected to be raked by the government - that money will be invested in schools sports and breakfast clubs. However, a FactCheck conducted by TheJournal.ie found that, while consumption might be reduced, the net effect on obesity rates was negligible.

As a result, we are seeing low calorie soft drinks significantly outperforming full sugar options. Why should we suffer this draconian approach to obesity?' This is a huge period of change for the industry, but it should be considered as an opportunity for innovation in your soft drink offering.

The sugar tax adds 18p per litre on drinks that have a total sugar content of 5-8g per 100ml - a sugar content of 5-8%.

The global report found they are actually helping the poor, with most of the tax revenues coming from higher income households.

Before the sugar tax was implemented in the United Kingdom there were concerns it wouldn't reduce people's consumption of sugary drinks or combat obesity and instead would act as a tax on the poor. "Customer experience is more important than ever, so aim to offer innovative soft drinks, lower in sugar but perfectly served, to stand out from the crowd". Drinks with higher levels of sugar in them will be taxed at higher amounts. There is more to do.

The last thing consumers need is for food to become more expensive.

Mintel, the market research firm, conducted a survey into how effective consumers were likely to find a taxation. Many argue that having a Coke or whatever other sugary drink is a personal choice and shouldn't be taxed - however, similar taxes have always been applied to alcohol and tobacco (among others) in most parts of the world. They have been steadily making their drinks healthier to combat obesity - sugar free and diet versions have been around for some time. Over half (56 per cent) of Brits say they would cut down on unhealthy products if there were tighter restrictions on advertising unhealthy food. Britain is too fat.
