Bomb hurls at BJP workers in West Bengal

Bhati said BJP candidates and workers were being threatened by TMC workers with the help of antisocial elements not to contest and the State EC had become a mute spectator to such illegalities aimed at distorting free and fair elections to panchayats.

Rohatgi told the bench that the party had to approach the Supreme Court because Calcutta High Court judges had been on a strike since February 19. "The Trinamool Congress has turned the panchayat elections into a farce in the state".

All major opposition parties have complained that the ruling TMC is not allowing their candidates to file nominations. "As soon as their workers have started getting beaten up, senior TMC leaders have gone to the Governor to complain about us", Ghosh said.

State BJP on Friday launched the protest following widespread violence across the state over filing of nominations. "They have not made a single specific averment as to where the candidates were denied nomination papers or denied them", he said.

"Till now 28 FIRs have been filed in the state for sporadic violence". BJP district president Debashish Chakraborty said, "Haldibari BDO office has been taken over by TMC goons. So you foment trouble and want paramilitary forces", he said.

"There is a triple whammy in BJPs petition".

The bench, after hearing the arguments, said it will pass orders on April 9. "First, they can not directly come to the Supreme Court, they should have first moved the State Election Commission, and thirdly they should have made some specific averments of nomination papers not being allowed in a particular district", Singhvi said. Spates of violence continued across West Bengal on Friday - the fifth day of submitting nominations for panchayat elections. Several incidents of political clashes between the workers of the BJP and the TMC have been reported from various areas of the state in the last few days over filing of nominations for the coming rural polls.

As per reports, the plea alleged that block development officers, appointed as assistant panchayat electoral registration officers by the West Bengal State Election Commission, are refusing to give nomination forms to BJP candidates.
