Intel launches new 8th Gen Coffee Lake mobile processors

In a revision notice published on Monday, the chipmaker now lists 16 microcode updates as "stopped", meaning that while patches have previously been released, Intel will no longer issue them.

The chip lines affected are largely older, and include: Bloomfield and Bloomfield Xeon, Clarksfield, Gulftown, Harpertown Xeon C0 and E0, Jasper Forest, Penryn/QC, SoFIA 3GR, Wolfdale C0 and M0, Wolfdale E0 and R0, Wolfdale Xeon C0 and Xeon E0, Yorkfield, and Yorkfield Xeon.

Despite Mac products dropping Intel chips being the main focus points of news, it was also announced that iPhones and iPads will also stop using them, as part of Apple's larger plan to develop their own chip systems, which is still in the earlier stages of development.

Intel makes progress on reissuing stable microcode updates against the Spectre attack.

Spectre and Meltdown are two flaws found at the chip level that can lead to serious data breaches.

The first thing to note here is that the processors in question are niche, older models, but this is still a potential fly in the ointment for some folks who are still using the silicon in question.

"Based on customer inputs, most of these products are implemented as "closed systems" and therefore are expected to have a lower likelihood of exposure to these vulnerabilities", explained Intel.

Its stated reasons also include that the products lack commercial system software support.

Apple is planning to drop Intel's chips from its Mac devices and replace them with its own design, a report has claimed. Built on the Coffee Lake platform using the 14nm++ process, Intel promises the new processors can edit 4K video up to 59 percent faster than the seventh generation chips with the same discrete graphics, which should be great news for video editors, especially as 4K continues to become the new standard.

Malware makers are experimenting with malware that exploits the Spectre and Meltdown CPU bugs.

Intel released an update to the Meltdown and Spectre mitigation guide, revealing that it stopped working on mitigations for some processor series. Intel has also already released microcode updates for every CPU released within the past five years, from Sandy Bridge (2nd generation) onwards.
