SpaceX just launched, did it land the nose cone on a boat?

The 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket lifted off at 7:13:51 a.m. PDT (10:13:51 a.m. EDT; 1413:51 GMT) from Space Launch Complex 4-East at Vandenberg.

The satellites were launched into orbit on board Falcon 9 rocket from the Vandenberg Air Force station in California.

Per the reports, SpaceX used an recovered first stage booster which was recovered and refurbished to be used as the first stage in the Friday launch. The satellites carry equipment for Aireon LLC's air traffic surveillance system created to provide airlines with frequent updates of aircraft positions, speeds and altitudes, even over remote oceanic and polar areas.

Whether Mr. Steven does or doesn't catch the fairing, the news will likely come from Musk himself - possibly on his social media accounts, where he's shared other updates about SpaceX's attempts to land fairings.

On Thursday, the USA communications regulator gave formal approval to a plan by Elon Musk's SpaceX to build a global broadband network using satellites.

Friday's rocket payload will include 10 satellites set to expand Iridium's communications bandwidth in space. The video window embedded above will spring to life shortly before the launch and feature commentary from SpaceX while the launch takes place.

For Friday's launch a ship, named Mr. Steven, will head out to sea and attempt to catch half of the fairing with a giant net.

"GPS guided parafoil twisted, so fairing impacted water at high speed", Musk tweeted. So in recent years the company had tested options for safely returning the payload fairings to the ocean, and then "catching" them with a boat.

Matt Desch, CEO at Iridium posted a statement saying that the company has already crossed the mark of one million subscribers and counting just when SpaceX was preparing to launch the satellites into the orbit.

But SpaceX wanted to recover the fairing.

As the app promises coverage of the SpaceX Falcon 9 launch on April 2, it sounds like it should be available within the next few days.

SpaceX will not, however, attempt to land the booster after Friday's launch. It is scheduled to launch a cargo mission to the International Space Station from Cape Canaveral, Florida.
