Baby driver takes the Jaguar I-Pace for quick spin

Waymo's Jaguar I-PACE fleet is set to start testing this year, with Krafcik noting that the company is preparing to deploy as many as 20,000 units of the electric SUVs within two years of production.

The timing of the announcement is slightly unfortunate for Waymo, with the first pedestrian death by a self-driving vehicle still fresh in the memory. "Those 20,000 vehicles can serve about one million trips on a single day".

The Jaguar vehicles, like the Pacficas, will bear the Waymo logo and be part of its coming ride-hailing network.

Waymo has been working on self-driving technology since 2009. Today, that future got a bit more luxurious, with the announcement of a partnership between Waymo and Jaguar, specifically Jag's electric I-Pace SUV. Other companies, including Waymo, are still testing, however. Earlier this year, it announced it was also ordering thousands of Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid minivans for its fleet.

Dr. Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover CEO, told the audience in New York, "With the Jaguar I-Pace we have a world beating vehicle that's captured the imagination of customers around the world". The specially modified Jaguar I-Pace cars will begin testing there later this year.

Waymo has teamed up with Jaguar for its next robotaxi.

In a safety report, Waymo details the procedures behind each of its different tests for its technology. Waymo even boasts that it is the only company that has vehicles on the road with no occupants in the front seats.

The news comes after Uber's self-driving program was shut down by Arizona Gov Doug Ducey after one of Uber's autonomous Volvos struck and killed a pedestrian while operating in autonomous mode. "We want to build a self-driving auto for every passenger and every trip", said Krafcik at the unveiling event in NY.

Toyota Motor Corp. said last week it was temporarily pausing autonomous vehicle testing following the Uber crash on USA public roads to help its test drivers, who could be experiencing "an emotional effect" from the incident. He said the Uber death was very sad "as is the deaths we have every day on the road from human errors and human behaviour". The service enables members of the public to request a vehicle using a mobile app, and will initially launch in Phoenix, Arizona.
