Sushma Swaraj confirms death of 39 Indians kidnapped by ISIS in 2014

He said the minister should visit all the families and apologise for misleading them and announcing the news on television first.

A couple of weeks ago Minister of State for External Affairs VK Singh had said that the Govt had started the DNA test of the workers.

He, however, managed to return to India after giving a slip to the ISIS militants suffering gun wound.

On Tuesday afternoon, Swaraj told the Rajya Sabha that the government had confirmed that all the Indians were dead. Heart-rending scenes were visible outside the homes of the deceased in Punjab as wailing family members tried to give vent to their pain having heard on TV, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj's statement that all 39 Indians in ISIS captivity were dead.

When asked what kept hopes alive of the fate of these men, Swaraj said at least two Heads of State had said they might not have been killed. "Let us hand over the bodies first". She said that it has become clear from the DNA of all the dead that all of them have been killed. We maintained this in 2014 and 2017 and we did not keep anyone in dark.

Masih's counsel Munish Kumar said, "We have argued that since Harjit was working in Mosul as a labourer, there was no ground to book him in cases for alleged offences cheating, human trafficking etc". The remaining 39 were then taken to Badoosh and killed by the terror group, according to India's foreign ministry.

In a September 26, 2016 dated letter, the MEA informed Gurpinder Kaur - her brother was one of the captive Indians - that Swaraj was monitoring the situation carefully, and that in light of the situation, the Iraqi camp Erbil was upgraded to the level of Consulate General of India.

However, politically and at a time when the ongoing budget session of Parliament has gained notoriety for repeated washouts in the face of Opposition protests, Swaraj's revelation is only expected to make things more hard for her and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's government. They were kidnapped by ISIS in Mosul in 2014. Relatives said they received panicked phone calls from some of the workers five days after Mosul was captured, asking for help. He had claimed the 39 had been shot dead in 2014 itself. Last year, she had argued that there was no evidence to suggest the men had been killed. "His was a cock-and-bull story", Swaraj said on Tuesday, adding that he had managed to flee the Daesh by faking his identity as a Muslim from Bangladesh.

Sushma has been dismissing all claims by Harjit Masih stating that he escaped posing as one of the Bangladeshis, who was let go by the terrorists and couldn't be trusted.
