US Representative With Ky. Ties Dies At 88

"Congresswoman Louise Slaughter was a giant".

He said he met with her just a few days before she fell, saying she had the same vigor as always.

Louise Slaughter (D) died at the age of 88 after a fall that prompted her hospitalization. "She's sort of a combination of Southern charm and back-room politics, a Southern belle with a cigar in her mouth", Jane Danowitz, executive director of the Women's Campaign Fund, told The Post in 1992.

Initially one of just 29 women in the House of Representatives, Slaughter was a flinty advocate of women's access to health care and abortion.

It took 14 years for Slaughter to pass the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act, which bans carriers and employers from using a person's family medical history showing hereditary illness to hire or fire. The measure, which passed in 2008, was created to prevent insurance providers from rejecting coverage for healthy people predisposed to cancer and other diseases.

Slaughter was serving her 16th term in the House, and her 31 years in the chamber were the third longest, according to the official House website. However, Slaughter did break ranks with her fellow Democrats on a number of issues, specifically with her vote against the North America Free Trade Agreement.

Speculation - driven by younger members expressing a desire for change - also continues about the future of Pelosi, 77, and her leadership team of Reps. Louise was a fighter, a trailblazer, a role model, and someone I am so very proud to have called my friend.

Slaughter was born in Harlan County, Kentucky, in 1929. She brought the grace and grit of her Southern background to her leadership in the Congress, building bridges and breaking down barriers all with her attractive accent. She later moved to Monticello as a child before receiving her master's degree at the University of Kentucky where she became a microbiologist.

They were married for 57 years, until Bob Slaughter's death in 2014. She leaves behind three daughters, seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Her efforts to fix the medical research imbalance that emphasized clinical trials on diseases that affect white men rather than those that hit women and minorities disproportionately led to the NIH Revitalization Act of 1993. She was a fierce advocate of fair trade, even breaking with her party leaders to denounce global trade agreements, saying they only hurt manufacturing jobs.
