KMVQ (99.7)/San Francisco Reacts And Relates To National Student Walk Out

The event was in response the shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., where 17 people were killed. Some held up large posters with writing, others chanted, "We want change and we want it now", and, "Show me what democracy looks like". One protest organizer, senior Jade Keene, says she's expecting an in-school suspension. "We can't keep having this repetitive cycle of death with nothing being done".

After all, thousands of other students in the Kansas City metro area and across the country walked out with school officials' blessings to protest gun violence and call for the nation's leaders to pass stricter gun laws.

Wellesley police were also at the high school, at the perimeter of the demonstration.

Almost 300 Dallas High School students left classes and walked out to the football stadium where 17 red roses were laid in the snow.

At Columbine High School in Colorado, the site of an infamous mass shooting in 1999, students walked out and released balloons in memory of those killed in Florida.

Following the massacre, the activist organization Women's March urged students across the country to take a stand by assembling outside at 10 a.m. Students were urged to observe 17 minutes of silence, one each for the victims.

Even from a few hundred feet away, sound bites of their impassioned speeches rang out. "They're deciding that they're going to let students have a voice on the issue but not do it in a way that maximizes the students' voice". We are the next generation.

The Prout School also participated in Wednesday's walkout and held a silent prayer vigil.

"This is not an anti-gun rally, but rather an act of remembrance", she wrote. "It happens in the places you think it won't".

"I saw some of them choked up". They were charged with battery on an officer, resisting arrest, and vandalism for allegedly throwing rocks at police vehicles.

"He's twitching. There's blood all over", she said.

Not all students were protesting for the same cause.

"I chose to protest today because I'm sick of seeing people getting injured and nothing happening", North Bend High School student Heaven Gonzales said.

Charlie told The News she was upset at those who didn't see the moment as a time of reflection for those who were affected by school shootings.

"We're not here for the politics for everything you've been seeing on the news". "To be completely honest, I'm not expecting anything immediately".

"Enough is enough. People are done with being shot", said Iris Fosse-Ober, a senior at Washburn High School in Minneapolis. He would like to see stronger school security and more focus on mental health.

"Children go to school in fear every day.

This gun was specifically designed so that a person of low skill, of no skill, could be effective in killing the enemy", Tanzi said.

"I just want people to care more about the lives of others, and realize that everything has an effect, whether it's big or small", she said.

These include expanded background checks for gun sales, a ban on assault weapons and raising the minimum age for some firearms purchases.
