British military brought in after spy nerve agent attack

Analyst Boulegue said that it would be "extremely difficult" to pinpoint who committed the attack, and that the response could be a lot more complicated if it turned out that internal factions were responsible.

British authorities have deployed members of the military to assist police in their investigation of the ex-Russian spy was attacked with a nerve agent.

Former London police chief Ian Blair said Friday that a police officer who is in serious condition visited Skripal's house - perhaps a hint that the nerve agent may have been delivered there.

About 180 troops have been brought in to help remove vehicles and potentially-contaminated objects around the crime scene due to their specialist knowledge, said police.

Sites that have been cordoned off include the city center bench where the two were found, a pub and restaurant they had visited earlier, Skripal's home, the graves of his wife, Lyudmila, and son, Alexander, and an industrial auto park.

Sergei Skripal, 66, and his 33-year-old daughter Yulia smiled for the camera while holding glasses of lager and wine inside the Italian chain.

Prime Minister Theresa May has said Britain will react with the appropriate response if a state was found to be behind the murder attempt.

British ministers and security officials gathered this weekend for a meeting of the government's emergency committee - known as COBRA - called by Home Secretary Amber Rudd to discuss ongoing developments in the case of the poisoned Russian former spy, Sergei Skripal.

"Military assistance will continue as necessary during this investigation", a police spokesman said.

The Times newspaper said British officials were talking to their United States and European counterparts about a co-ordinated retaliation, which could include "diplomatic, economic and military measures" if Moscow was behind the attack.

The grave of Skripal's wife, Liudmila, who died in 2012 from cancer, was also sealed off.

The pair are critically ill after being attacked with an undisclosed nerve agent.

"Nick would like us to say on his behalf that he and his family are hugely grateful for all the messages of support from the public, and colleagues from the police family", the police department said.

On Friday, Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov dismissed allegations of Russian involvement as "propaganda".

Nick Bailey, one of the first officers on the scene, is also being treated but is sitting up and talking after initially being admitted to intensive care.

Skripal served four years of a 13-year sentence in Russian Federation after he was caught spying for MI6 and was released as part of a spy exchange in 2010, when he was given refuge in the UK.

Police say they know the nerve agent used in the attack, but have declined to say what it was or how they suspect it was administered.

Scotland Yard said it was not exhuming a body, but would not comment further on the investigation, saying only the tent was in place for "operational reasons".

A British public inquiry said Litvinenko's murder had probably been approved by Putin and carried out by two Russians, Dmitry Kovtun and Andrei Lugovoy.

Mr Glen was responding to some locals who had demanded "decisive action" over the incident. "If you really need help from Russian Federation, then we will be ready to consider such a possibility, if we do have relevant data", he said, speaking in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
