White Nationalist Speech: 12 Arrested Before Michigan Event

Fistfights near Michigan State University broke out Monday, March 6, in the latest clash between supporters of alt-right leader Richard Spencer and those protesting his white supremacist views.

"If you aren't getting protested, you aren't doing anything that matters", Spencer said during the speech. Two dozen people were arrested as a result of the protests, police said.

Additional reporting from Newsy affiliate CNN. Police then tried to route attendees past protestors, but punches were nearly immediately thrown as the two groups neared one another.

Some demonstrators threw rocks, fruit, and water bottles at people entering the rally. Spencer planned to speak at the University of Cincinnati this week but it fell through after the school demanded an $11,000 security fee, Spencer's attorney told The Associated Press.

Five area police agencies were at the pavilion to keep the two sides apart.

Katie Kuhn of Lansing led some anti-Spencer chants.

"Hate speech is not free speech, advocating for the destruction or separation of various people based off the color of their skin, and their ethnicity is an abomination and it's abhorred and I don't know why I have to say that but that's why we're here", said Lauren Pepper, a MSU student. Officials at Michigan State did not immediately respond to a request for comment. "I think Nazis, we had a chance with them, and we figured out we weren't going to do that again".

"The ideas that they espouse: genocide, white supremacy, fascism, are anti-American and risky to our people, to our nation, to Americans", he said.

"Like really took a stand against the Alt-Right and Richard Spencer's movement and just put our bodies in the road and said you can't go to this event".

The event was ticketed and Spencer was given control over who is allowed in, denying several local media organizations from purchasing tickets.
