Guatemalan President to follow Trump lead in Moving Embassy in May

The move is planned for May 16, two days after the United States plans to move its embassy. "And we will continue to join with President Morales in fighting for the human rights and the abilities of the Venezuelan people to take back over their government".

Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales however soon followed Trump's move, making Guatemala the first country to do so. "His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right", Morales said in a speech at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee's annual policy conference, according to a translation of his remarks on the pro-Israel U.S. lobbying group's website.

"This decision strongly evidences Guatemala's continued support of Israel", he went on. Trump's move reversed decades of USA policy, upsetting the Arab world and Western allies.

Guatemala has announced that it will move its embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in May, the country's president announced on Sunday.

In February, Morales received a prestigious award from the Israel Allies Foundation in Jerusalem for his December announcement that Guatemala would return its embassy to Israel's capital. "His courageous decision has encouraged us to do what is right", Morales explained.

The status of Jerusalem is one of the thorniest obstacles to forging a peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians, who want East Jerusalem as their capital.

There had always been worldwide consensus that the city's status should be settled as part of a two-state peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

In 2016, Trump's presence and speech at AIPAC, where he called himself the "true friend of Israel", won support from the pro-Israeli voting population and lobbies in the U.S.

Morales said America's leader had been the trail-blazer for his nation as well.

US President Donald Trump bucked decades of US foreign policy by formally recognizing Jerusalem as Israel's capital last December and setting in motion plans to move the US embassy there from Tel Aviv.
