Silicon Valley's White Male Panic Takes Root at Google

YouTube past year stopped hiring white and Asian males for technical positions because they didn't help the world's largest video site achieve its goals for improving diversity, according to a civil lawsuit filed by a former employee.

Google had "irrefutable policies, memorialized in writing and consistently implemented in practice, of systematically discriminating in favor of job applicants who are Hispanic, African-American or female, and against Caucasian and Asian men", according to Wilberg's complaint.

"We have a clear policy to hire candidates based on their merit, not their identity", the company said Thursday.

Last month, Tim Chevalier, an ex-software developer at Google, also filed a lawsuit claiming that the company fired him over pro-diversity posts circulated internally.

To help prove his allegations, Wilberg included a screenshot of a Google tracking system - which was subsequently deleted - that kept track of candidates' gender and race, pointing out that the company had not reached their goals in respect to hiring female, black and Latinx candidates. Black and Hispanic engineers, the racial groups Wilberg claims were unfairly favored by YouTube, together account for only 4 percent of Google's technical workforce.

In January, James Damore, the engineer who was sacked after writing a screed against Google's diversity efforts, filed a lawsuit alleging discrimination against white people, men, and political conservatives. He also alleged that late previous year, management deleted emails and other digital records of diversity requirements.

According to Bloomberg, Arne Wilberg worked at Google for nine years as both an employee and contractor.

It is important to note that as of 2017, 69% of Google's total workforce was male, a slight decrease from 70% in 2014.

It is not the first time the company is criticized over its diversity practices. In one case, the suit claims, hiring managers pressured Wilberg to make an applicant over 40 apply for a position he wasn't qualified for so the job seeker would fail to gain employment at Google.

In March 2017, a YouTube staffing manager shot an email to the recruiters stating: "Please continue with L3 [level three] candidates in process and only accept new L3 candidates that are from historically underrepresented groups".
