Iran's peace plan still the only solution to Yemen war, Zarif says

The United States threatened unilateral action against Iran on Monday after Russian Federation vetoed a western bid for the United Nations Security Council to call out Tehran for failing to prevent its weapons from falling into the hands of Yemen's Houthi group.

Nine votes and no vetoes from the five permanent council members - Britain, France, China, Russia and the United States - are required to adopt resolutions at the Security Council.

The report submitted by the United Nations panel of experts, which is affiliated with the sanctions committee in Yemen, was welcomed by the coalition as it provided evidence on the involvement of the Iranian regime in supporting terrorist organizations, including the Houthi militia.

After the veto, the council unanimously adopted a measure that extended for one year the sanctions regime against Yemen, but that text made no mention of Iran.

The experts examined missile remnants fired into Saudi Arabia by the Houthis previous year and said many "are consistent with those of the Iranian designed and manufactured Qiam-1 missile".

Since Russia is a permanent member of the Security Council, the United Kingdom draft failed to be adopted.

Amir-Abdollahian stressed that Iran supports Yemen's unity and territorial integrity, and that political resolution involving all tribes and parties is the only way to get out of this crisis.

The statement by Western powers condemning Iran on February 27 shows the United States has galvanized the support of major European allies, all of whom signed Iran's 2015 nuclear deal along with Russian Federation and China, for taking action to deter Iran's ballistic-missile activities.

The US administration maintains that Iran is not living up to its commitments under the 2015 nuclear deal, which President Donald Trump has criticised as the "worst ever".

In March 2015, a Saudi-led, USA -backed coalition began what has turned into a devastating war that has killed more than 10,000 people, displaced 2 million, and created the world's greatest humanitarian crisis.

Yemen's defenseless people have been under massive attacks by a coalition led by the Saudi regime for nearly three years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.
