Trump campaign aide to plead guilty

Gates appeared to be in limbo about whether or not to plead guilty to Mueller. Russian Federation has denied meddling in the campaign and Trump has denied any collusion took place.

Dramatically escalating the pressure and stakes, special counsel Robert Mueller filed additional criminal charges Thursday against president Donald Trump's former campaign chairman and his business associate.

LUCAS: There has been a lot of noise around Gates and his legal team, and he's been in a dispute with his lawyers who petitioned to leave the case.

Thursday's indictment was the second round of charges against Gates and Manafort, who were among the first to be charged, as part of a Mueller-led investigation into alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 USA presidential election and collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Both Manafort and Gates have pleaded not guilty. Manafort says he had "hoped and expected" that Gates would have "the strength" to continue to trial. "For reasons yet to surface he chose to do otherwise", Manafort said in a statement.

In a letter to loved ones obtained by ABC News, Gates wrote that "despite my initial desire to vigorously defend myself, I have had a change of heart".

Asked how he felt while leaving the courthouse after the plea, Gates smiled and said, "Very good". The son of a career Army officer, Gates had maintained an appearance of wealthy prestige while living in an upscale neighborhood of Richmond, Va. That uncertainty ended on Friday afternoon, when Gates stood before a judge in federal court in Washington.

It is unclear which charges Gates will be pleading guilty to Friday or what he would provide to the special counsel's investigation.

Since his original indictment, Gates's case has taken a few unexpected twists.

They said more than $75 million passed through the men's offshore bank accounts, and that they laundered more than $30 million of income to hide it from the USA government.

Calk has not received a job in the Trump administration.

Former White House national security adviser Michael T. Flynn pleaded guilty on December 1 to lying to investigators about his communications with a Russian diplomat during the presidential transition.

In another instance, Gates and Manafort doctored profit and loss statements from their firm to secure a business loan, the indictment says.

There have been other guilty pleas as well.

George Papadopoulos, who was on the Trump campaign's foreign policy advisory panel, admitted in October 2017 to making false statements to Federal Bureau of Investigation agents about contacts he had with the Russian government in 2016.

According to the court document, Van Der Zwaan "willfully and knowingly make materially false, fictitious, and fraudulent statements", both to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and to the office of special counsel Mueller, when he was interrogated on November 3, 2017 about his contacts with Gates about the Tymoshenko report.
