Because "hunters on the oligarchs", Russian Federation may block YouTube

Because

Access to two of the pages leading to Alexey Navalny's investigation on Oleg Deripaska, as well as the video about the investigation, is limited in Russian Federation, as follows from the Roskomnadzor registry.

Russian Federation may block both YouTube and Instagram after videos showing oligarch Oleg Deripaska were uploaded to the social media sites. Ms. Vashukevich removed the material from her Instagram account, but as of late Thursday, Mr. Navalny's investigation was still available on YouTube.

Deripaska won the court order against a woman whose Instagram posts, book excerpts and open-source data Navalny used to establish a connection between the billionaire and Prikhodko.

As of Thursday, the video still remained online, although Russia's communications regulator Roskomnadzor said it had issued a request to Google to delete the video.

It said the platforms showed a senior government official sailing on a yacht with a billionaire oligarch, who has links with the former Trump campaign manager Paul Manafort. He was banned from running against Mr. Putin because of a criminal conviction that he and rights advocates say was politically motivated.

Sergei Prikhodko has not denied the authenticity of the video/photo/audio materials or any of Rybka's claims regarding his appearance and behavior on Deripaska's yacht.

The video is also the target of two lawsuits - one filed by Deripaska, the other by Navalny.

Instagram photos were also among those that the watchdog wanted to block, though Rybka, whose pseudonym means "fish", appears to have deleted the original images of Deripaska from her account.

Following the court order, Roskomnadzor dutifully added the photo and video material to its list of things that must be censored and contacted YouTube and Instagram to order it to take the material off of its site or face being blocked throughout the country. He tweeted that both sites were up and running in Russian Federation, but could be shut down Wednesday night. Both Deripaska and Prikhodko say that the information the blogger made public is untrue. "The companies were given three business days to block access to the content, or face investigation".

Navalny's producer Oxana Baulina said they have received a warning from YouTube and Google Russia offices ordering them to remove Navalny's video-investigation. Navalny refused and appealed the ruling. According to the businessman's spokesperson, the plaintiffs violated Deripaska's privacy. Instead, this will come down to YouTube and Instagram either participating in the censorship or being blocked outright.

Navalny, who was barred from running against Vladimir Putin in March's presidential elections, has built a massive online following in Russian Federation for investigations accusing government ministers and top officials of corruption.
