Suspect facing felony charges in death of Colts' Jackson

Prosecutors on Wednesday charged 37-year-old Manuel Orrego-Savala in a drunken-driving crash that killed Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson and his Uber driver in Indiana.

Investigators said Orrego-Savala was driving the pickup truck that hit Jackson and his Uber driver, 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe, while the men were standing outside Monroe's auto early Sunday along Interstate 70. He also has numerous other misdemeanor convictions and arrests in California and in, said U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement spokeswoman Nicole Alberico.

Prosecutors said Orrego-Zavala, an undocumented immigrant who has been deported from the US twice, crashed his truck on I-70 near Holt Road early Sunday morning.

A breath test found that Orrego-Savala's blood-alcohol content was almost 0.24%, three times Indiana's legal limit of 0.08%, according to an affidavit. The 26-year-old Jackson and 54-year-old Jeffrey Monroe were struck as they stood outside Monroe's vehicle along Interstate 70 in Indianapolis.

Jackson, who grew up in Atlanta, started eight games for the Colts during the 2016 season, finishing third on the team with 61 tackles. He tried to flee the scene but was arrested by a responding officer on a nearby exit ramp, according to Indiana State Police.

The office of Marion County prosecutor Terry Curry filed the charges Wednesday.

Orrego-Savala previously had a 2005 conviction for driving under the influence in Redwood City, California.

Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson was killed on Sunday when a Ford-150 struck him and another man on the side of a highway in Indianapolis. The two more serious counts each carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.

President Donald Trump referenced the Sunday death of Indianapolis Colts linebacker Edwin Jackson while calling on Democrats for a stricter stance on immigration on Tuesday.

Just learned about the passing of one of my favorite teammates.

"According to court documents and jail information, Alex Cabrera Gonsales is the same person as Manuel Orrego-Savala, the man now in custody in Marion County for allegedly causing Sunday's crash", Meyer said, according to WBIC Indianapolis.

Over the next year, Wagstaffe said, Orrego-Savala was convicted of misdemeanor drug possession and two felony drug possession charges.

Both men were outside the auto when a black Ford F-150 drove into the shoulder and struck the vehicle. Monroe and Jackson were pronounced dead at the scene.

Jackson's friend Chad Bouchez said he would not want his death to be politicized.

"We can't put illegal immigrant criminals above the interest and safety of our own citizens", Rep. Todd Rokita, R-Ind., said.

Trump also offered his "prayers and best wishes" to Jackson's family. His other aliases include variations on the spelling of Orrego-Savala.
