How the Redskins could make a mess of the QB market

In what could be a key development for teams in need of quarterbacks this season, the Washington Redskins are considering using their franchise tag on Kirk Cousins despite having acquired Alex Smith from the Kansas City Chiefs, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Sunday. Of course, there are ways Cousins could resist the move by waiting to sign the franchise tag or refusing to report to camp if he's traded somewhere he doesn't want to go.

When the Redskins made a deal for Alex Smith last week, that effectively put an end to the Kirk Cousins era in Washington.

The Redskins will send a third-round pick in this year's National Football League draft and cornerback Kendall Fuller to the Chiefs for Smith.

For some teams, the idea of not having to commit to Cousins long-term could be appealing. Teams aren't going to give up a high draft pick for one year of Cousins.

But what about a possible tag-and-trade situation in which Washington could get more than a 2019 compensatory third-rounder for Cousins?

Not only would that be an extremely disrespectful move to Cousins, it would also be a risky one.

Ultimately, it seems unlikely a tag-and-trade scenario will actually take place, but it is at least something Washington is considering, for what that is worth. This, in theory, would dampen the potential haul the Redskins could get for Cousins, as a team would most likely trade for Cousins with the intention of working out a longer deal.

Cousins failed to reach a long-term deal in previous talks with the Redskins, which included former general manager Scot McCloughan until he was let go last February. Cousins, who is expected to become a free agent, will have no shortage of suitors. But in order for Washington to trade Cousins, he would first have to sign the franchise tag tender.

Washington has the clock starting on February 20th to decide if they want to take this into consideration or just take a loss and take their chances in the National Football League draft ot free agency.

The Broncos got a close look at Cousins in Week 16, when the veteran bounced back from a 1-for-7 start to finish with 299 yards passing, three touchdowns, a 94.3 passer rating and a win over the Broncos.
