Police said that the avalanche hit a post of Indian army in Machil area of the district, resulting in the killing of three soldiers. "One soldier is injured and no one is missing", he said.

"The people living in higher reaches of these districts should avoid movement in the avalanche-prone areas/slopes for the next 24 hours", he had added.

The avalanche hit an army post of 21 Rajput at Sona Pandi Gali in Machil at around 4:30 pm, NDTV reported.

"A search operation was started immediately and all the four soldiers trapped under snow were evacuated", an army official said. One soldier reportedly died on the spot, and two others succumbed to their injuries while being transported to the base hospital at Badami Bagh cantonment near Srinagar.

The condition of the injured soldier Sepoy Bipin is stated to be stable.

The three deceased soldiers have been identified as Havaldar Kamlesh Singh (39), Naik Balveer (33) and Sepoy Rajinder (25). Earlier in the first week of January, eleven people, including a Border Roads Organisation officer and a year-old baby girl died when snow avalanches hit at two places in Tangdhar area of Kupwara.
