Washington imposes 'arms embargo' on S. Sudan, urges related calls from UN

"The Department of State today announces that it is implementing restrictions on the export of defense articles and defense services into South Sudan", State Department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement.

But the move prevents any U.S. company or citizen from offering defence services to the country.

The unilateral move would signal that the Trump administration has lost patience with South Sudan's warring sides after ceasefires have been repeatedly violated.

Some top officials close to Kiir have already been sanctioned by the United States, including the once-powerful army chief Paul Malong, who was later fired and forced into exile when he quarreled with the president.

In South Sudan's capital Juba, Kiir's spokesperson Ateny Wek Ateny declined to comment.

The move, however, is mostly symbolic since the United States has nearly no defense trade with the East African country.

With the Sudanese government now fighting on two fronts, both sides are looking for resolution.

We hope that the leaders of South Sudan will make peace and allow for the country to be rebuilt so that these people can go back whenever they chose to do so.

"The message must be clear - the United States, the region, and the worldwide community will not stand idly by as innocent South Sudanese civilians are murdered".

Brian Adeba of the Enough Project, a Washington-based policy group fighting to prevent genocide and atrocities, said a weapons ban would be more effective if it was imposed by a group of countries, including some in Africa. WAR Oil-rich South Sudan has been wrecked by civil war since 2013, when troops loyal to Kiir clashed with troops loyal to then-Vice President Riek Machar.

South Sudan is the world's youngest country, having gained independence in 2011.

Nauert urged South Sudan's neighbors and other countries to take similar measures.

The number of refugees from South Sudan is expected to hit the three million mark by the end of the year, the United Nations agencies said.
