Google plans to make Taipei its largest R&D center in Asia Pacific

Ever since Google worked with HTC to design and manufacture the original Pixel phones, rumors had been circulating about Google possibly acquiring the company.

Google's parent company Alphabet has closed the HTC purchase.

Osterloh also used the blog post to announce that Google is expanding its "footprint" in the Asia Pacific, with Taipai - where HTC is headquartered - becoming Google's largest engineering site in the region.

Many of the HTC staff members had already been working with Google to develop the Pixel line, the companies explained.

Let's not beat around the bush: Google has not acquired HTC as a sole entity.

While noting that Google has launched its second-generation Made by Google products since announcing the HTC deal, including the Pixel 2 and Google Home Mini, Osterloh said that producing hardware is "hard". The deal has now been confirmed by Google itself.

Google will pay 2,000 HTC engineers $1.1 billion to help it come with a revolutionary model that could take on Apple on the premium smartphone market. "Today marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter at HTC as we continue to drive innovation in our branded smartphone and VIVE virtual reality businesses", Cher Wang, chairwoman at HTC said in the statement. Whether or not, it would lead to Pixel phones being an HTC-exclusive is yet to be seen though. This means Google now has a bonafide in-house phone team that it will no doubt be putting to good use developing new Pixel phones. Osterloh told Bloomberg in an interview that honestly, Apple is performing really well in developed markets.

These will combine "the best of Google's AI, software and hardware", as well as leverage the "decades of experience" brought to the table by the newly acquired engineering team. That experiment flopped. Google never integrated the business and sold most of it to Lenovo Group for $2.91 billion.
