Andrew McCabe resigns as Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director

FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe has stepped down, effective Monday, sources have reported.

Donald Trump became enraged after seeing footage of James Comey using a government-funded airplane the day after he fired the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director, calling Andrew McCabe to complain about the trip-and call the former acting director's wife "a loser". They spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak on the record.

Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Monday that the White House was not involved in McCabe's decision to leave weeks before his planned retirement.

An FBI spokeswoman declined to comment.

Trump's firing of Comey in May 2017 as the FBI was investigating potential collusion between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation led to the Justice Department's naming of Special Counsel Robert Mueller to take over the probe. Comey also has asserted that Trump in private conversations insisted on loyalty.

The sources, speaking on condition of anonymity, told the newspaper that the IG report looks into actions taken by McCabe and other bureau officials during the campaign, when the FBI was probing both Hillary Clinton and the Trump camp's ties to Russian Federation.

McCabe in particular has become a main target of those critics, who have accused the bureau of being too favorable toward Hillary Clinton in its investigation of her use of a personal email server while secretary of state. No charges were brought against Clinton. His wife ran for a state Senate office in Virginia and received donations from former Virginia Gov. Terry McAuliffe, who has been linked to the Clintons for years. By that time, his wife's campaign was over and his involvement was not seen as a conflict.

Trump has been publicly pressuring McCabe for months and has claimed that McCabe has an anti-Trump bias. As recently as last week, Mr. McCabe had told people he hoped to stay until he was eligible to retire in mid-March.

Special prosecutor and former FBI director Robert Mueller is now in charge of leading the investigation.

Sanders says the White House has "some concerns" over McCabe's work at the bureau.
