Mars makes 'Magic' at Grammys

Mars makes 'Magic' at Grammys

His standout album, 24K Magic won Best R&B Album as well during the pre-televised ceremony.

Kendrick Lamar, who is likely to be the big victor tonight, and Bruno Mars also picked up early Grammy awards on Sunday in ceremonies ahead of the three-hour televised show celebrating the best in music.

Jay-Z has a leading eight nominations at this year's Grammys, mostly from his soul-baring 4:44 album.

He'd already won for rap/sung collaboration (with Rihanna), rap performance ("Humble"), rap song ("Humble") and music video (ditto). He was joined Sunday by U2's Bono and The Edge, and also Dave Chappelle - who told jokes in between Lamar's performance.

Double winners included Jason Isbell, Justin Hurwitz, CeCe Winans and Chris Stapleton.

Following Adele's massive success previous year, it was largely a night of disappointment for British nominees but absentee Ed Sheeran did win best pop vocal album with Divide and solo performance with Shape Of You.

- Best pop duo/group performance: "Feel It Still", Portugal.

In 2014, an Instagram post of white rapper Macklemore's text apologizing to Lamar for winning best rap album went viral.

Lamar follows close behind with seven and both are up for the top honours of record of the year and album of the year.

One thing to know is that Bruno Mars' name was read A LOT on Grammys night. And the Grammys are nearly guaranteeing that this year will be historic: Four of the five album of the year nominees are rap and R&B-based albums from black or Latino artists.

Kendrick's recent recognition marks just another achieved milestone in his career after first gaining widespread fame with his album, "good kid, m.A.A.d city".

After Childish Gambino and Cardi B performed "Finesse", comedian Trevor Noah quipped: "I love that song".

And Julia Michaels, a talented songwriter who has written hits for Bieber and Selena Gomez, is nominated for song of the year for her single, "Issues". Artists are expected to wear white roses as a symbol of solidarity with victims of sexual harassment as the #MeToo movement spreads from Hollywood to the music industry.

Cara said she was wearing a white rose to show support to women not just in the entertainment industry.

Kesha performs "Praying" at the 60th annual Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden, Jan. 28, 2018, in NY.

Eric Church, Maren Morris and Brothers Osborne performed "Tears in Heaven", a moving tribute to the music fans who lost their lives during the attacks at the Route 91 Harvest Festival in October and the Arianna Grande concert in Manchester, England last May.
