Janelle Monáe Brings a 'Time's Up' Message to the Grammy Awards

Kesha performs "Praying" at the 60th annual Grammy Awards at Madison Square Garden, Jan. 28, 2018, in NY. That didn't happen, but she did have an opportunity to perform the song with some stars of past and present, including Camila Cabello, Cyndi Lauper, and many more. Kesha released her nominated comeback album Rainbow in August, after her sexual assault case was dismissed. At the end of the performance, Kesha was seen crying as she hugged the fellow performers.

"Praying" is an autobiographical song clearly directed at Dr. Luke, the producer whom Kesha accuses of raping and psychologically tormenting her. "I'm so proud and nervous and overwhelmed to be performing it at the Grammys on Sunday, and if you need it I hope this song finds you".

"Praying", released to much fanfare last year, is the singer's first solo single in almost four years. He has denied the allegations and countersued. Many celebs wore white roses on the red carpet to show support for the Time's Up movement, and Kendrick Lamar kicked off the show with a politically charged opening number featuring U2 and Dave Chappelle. "We come in peace, but we mean business", Monae began, as the audience erupted in applause. Kesha, and women like her, are regularly praised for baring all the details of their pain.

Despite the rousing reception, Kesha was passed over for the awards. "It felt like an emotional raw victory for myself, one step closer to healing", Kesha said of writing the song. We've heard powerful stories throughout the Me Too and Time's Up movements, but Kesha's performance tonight will stand out in a way that very few others do.

"This song is about me finding peace in the fact that I can't control everything - because trying to control everyone was killing me", she wrote previous year.
