Death Toll in Terror Kabul Attack Reaches 103, Over 230 Injured

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which killed mostly civilians, according to Kabul Police spokesman Basir Mujahid.

Afghan Public Health Ministry says death toll in suicide auto bomb attack in has risen to 63, with 151 wounded in the deadliest insurgent attack in the country so far this year. He then detonated his explosives at a second checkpoint, Rahimi said.

An interior ministry spokesman blamed the Haqqani network, a militant group affiliated with the Taliban which Afghan and Western officials consider to be behind numerous biggest attacks on urban targets in Afghanistan. "Taliban and Daesh are taking advantage of the situation", said a man seeking news of his missing uncle at the Emergency Hospital.

The president followed up his tweet with a firm call for "decisive action" against the Taliban.

"Today's attack once again demonstrates that the enemies of Afghanistan kill indiscriminately", Army Gen. John W. Nicholson said in a statement. Terrified survivors fled the crowded area of the Afghan capital, which was scattered with body parts, blood and debris, and hospitals were overwhelmed by the large number of wounded, estimated to number at least 158.

However, the Taliban have dismissed any suggestion that they have been weakened by the U.S. approach and say they will only agree to talks when worldwide forces leave Afghanistan.

This bombing is the latest in a string of deadly attacks across Afghanistan in the past week.

Saturday's powerful explosion came a week after militants killed 22 people at an worldwide hotel in 's capital, .

Although Tillerson did not name any specific countries, Washington has repeatedly accused Pakistan of neglect in cracking down on militant groups such as the Taleban or their Haqqani allies.

The attack was condemned by the presidential palace as a "crime against humanity".

Security checkpoints in the city have been assigned additional personnel, with an alert issued on Sunday warning that the extremist "Islamic State" group was planning to attack supermarkets and shops in Kabul that are frequented by foreigners.

Following the hotel attack, a retired Pakistani brigadier, Ishaq Khattak, rejected Afghan and US allegations that the Haqqani network waged the attacks from inside the sanctuaries provided by Pakistan.

The explosion happened Saturday near diplomatic and government buildings.

Twenty minutes before the blast an AFP reporter saw police checking ambulances several hundred metres from the scene of the explosion, as the drivers and patients stood on the street.

The brutality and frequency of the attacks, including one in December at a Shiite cultural center has shattered Afghanistan's usually quiet winter fighting season.

The Taliban claimed the attack, which dealt a major blow to the USA -backed Afghan government. According to NBC News, he had led fighters in multiple attacks on Afghan security forces and US soldiers in Afghanistan.

Meanwhile, more USA troops, in hundreds, are en route to Afghanistan to start with a riskier mission.
