Silverman: Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds still far away from Hall of Fame

Chipper Jones and Jim Thome got in on their first try, while Vladimir Guerrero (second) and Trevor Hoffman (third) also got in.

Former Seattle designated hitter Edgar Martinez came close after a grass-roots campaign to boost him.

Controversial players such as Barry Bonds and Roger Clemens, who have failed to get in, are getting closer and closer to the 75 percent needed for induction.

Former Arizona Wildcat Trevor Hoffman was one of four players selected for induction into the HOF by the Baseball Writers Association of America on Wednesday.

Jones was voted the 1999 National League MVP and was an eight-time all-star for the Braves. Thome hit 61 of his 612 career home runs against the Twins, more than any opposing player in franchise history, and 22 of them either tied the game or gave Thome's team the lead.

Guerrero became one of the league's most colorful players, putting on a hitting clinic and being named to nice All-Star teams in his 16 year career.

Just a few short years later, Hoffman would make his Major League debut on April 6, 1993 with the Florida Marlins.

Hoffman, who racked up 601 career saves during an 18-year career spent nearly exclusively with the San Diego Padres, had no desire to dive into the steroid-era controversy on his election day.

There are going to be a lot of speeches on July 29 at Cooperstown, with the four inductees joining Alan Trammell and Jack Morris, who were elected in December by the Hall's Modern Era Committee.

"I think everybody is pretty excited", Hoffman said.

As has been the case throughout a divisive post-MLB career, the exclusion of Bonds from this year's class brought on a ton of different opinions in the social media world (read them here).

"It's a big number, a special, special number", Thome told the Star Tribune at the time. He ranks eighth all time in home runs and seventh in walks.

Also, Thome had a.402 on-base, .554 slugging and.956 on-base-plus-slugging percentages over a career that spanned parts of three decades and included 2,543 games played.

At some point, seven Cy Young Awards and an MVP award (Clemens), and seven MVP awards (Bonds) become hard to ignore, even for the most jaded voter. Since first appearing on the ballot, it's looked like this: 36.2 percent (2013); 34.7 percent (2014); 36.8 percent (2015); 44.3 (2016); 53.8 percent (2017); and 56.4 (2018).

Helton finished his 17-year career with a.316 batting average, 2,519 hits and 369 homers.

Voter apathy towards Bonds and Clemens may be indicative of a wider trend in 2018. Next year Mariano Rivera is on the ballot.

Many Sox fans remember when Thome was hitting home runs with the Indians. Regardless of what you call him... you can now begin the sentence with Hall-of-Famer.

I voted for Martinez for the first time on this ballot.
