Astros bolster rotation by landing Pirates ace Gerrit Cole

Cole was reportedly destined for pinstripes in December and then was reportedly heading to Houston earlier this week, which was denied by both parties.

The players the Pirates got in return for Cole is a bit underwhelming. A first-round pick in 2011, he was traded to Houston in 2012 as part of a 10-player deal that sent J.A. Happ and others to Toronto. Moran, 25, batted.301 with 18 home runs in 82 minor-league games, and was four for 11 over seven games with the big club. Over the past two years, he's played in a total of 16 games with the Astros. Moran hit 18 home runs and drove in 65 runs while sporting a.301 average. He was the No. 6 overall pick of the Marlins in 2013. He was traded to Houston a year later. He is 59-42 with a 3.50 ERA in five major league seasons, including 19-8 in 2015. There hadn't been a lot of movement this winter on baseball's hot stove, but this deal could get things cooking.

They accepted a package headlined by Musgrove, who is unproven as a starter in the major leagues.

Cole will join former Cy Young Award winners Dallas Keuchel and Justin Verlander on a team that just won its first championship.

Injuries checked Cole to 21 starts in 2016, but he rebounded past year and was one of just 15 pitchers in the majors to work 200-plus innings. He figures to open the season as one of the primary setup relievers behind new closer Fernando Rodney, who signed a one-year free-agent contract with the Twins in December.

With Cole gone, Jameson Taillon and Ivan Nova will anchor the rotation ahead of Trevor Williams and Chad Kuhl. Musgrove has a career 5.37 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 114 strikeouts in 135.2 MLB innings as a starter, but he has looked like a potential mid-rotation arm at times in the majors and high minors. Steven Brault or Tyler Glasnow could be in the No. 5 spot.
