Wall 'Must' Be Part of Any DACA Deal

The goal of the White House meeting was to discuss how to reach an agreement between Democrats and Republicans, while still accomplishing the President's push for a wall along the USA border with Mexico and other changes to the U.S. immigration system - something Democrats widely oppose.

Republican lawmakers previewed a bill to permanently establish the DACA program, fund a border wall, end chain migration and end the visa lottery program.

Speaker Paul Ryan said Tuesday that bipartisan talks are ongoing to address how to craft a legislative solution for so-called "Dreamers" that's tied with some sort of border enforcement provisions, such as funding for a border wall. The judge in Sacramento who made the ruling Tuesday said lawyers in favor of DACA clearly demonstrated that young immigrants were likely to suffer irreparable harm without court action.

"This should be a bill of love, truly". And over the weekend, Trump told reporters "we all want DACA to happen, but we also want great security for our country".

Trump allowed cameras and media to watch the discussion for almost an hour. Their desire for speed comes as President Donald Trump and lawmakers seek to parlay an extraordinary White House meeting into momentum for resolving a politically blistering issue.

"I really do believe Democrat and Republican, the people sitting in this room, really want to get something done", Trump said.

"It was like being in a 9th grade civics class", the source said.

At one point, Trump suggested that Congress restore "earmarks" - or pet spending programs, once referred to as pork, to make it easier for members to work with each other. "You folks are going to have to come up with a solution", he said. "Because I respect them".

So far, lawmakers involved in negotiations to protect those in the DACA program are frustrated with how negotiations are unfolding. Congress has until March 5 to salvage the Obama-era program and protect an estimated 800,000 undocumented immigrants who grew up in the US from deportation.

Republicans had a meeting among themselves on Capitol Hill last night with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen that went relatively well, according to the source.

Goodlatte and his colleague's proposal also includes $30 billion of funding for a border wall along with other border security measures. "If they come to me with things not in love with I'm going to do it". However, he ordered the government to continue processing renewal applications from people who had previously been covered.

Ahead of a bipartisan meeting at the White House Tuesday, the question is becoming whether Democrats can accept some version of a wall (albeit they'd call it something else) in exchange for protections for those who are eligible for DACA.

The wall now represents a complicated political question for Republicans and Democrats.

Pennsylvania Rep. Lou Barletta praised Trump's initial decision to rescind the DACA protections set forth by the Obama administration.

The frustrations have bubbled up publicly, perhaps most starkly on display when Democratic Rep. Luis Gutierrez of IL took to the House floor in September and "General Kelly, when he was the head of Homeland Security, lied straight to the faces of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus about preventing the mass deportation of (DACA recipients)".

A host of lawmakers attended including Durbin and Democratic Sen. The list also includes red state Democrats like Sens.

"Unfortunately, following that meeting, the White House issued a series of unreasonable demands entirely outside the scope of our ongoing negotiations about DACA and border security", Schumer said on the Senate floor Monday. Martha McSally, Michael McCaul and Bob Goodlatte.
