U.S. envoy praises Iranian demonstrators, says protests spontaneous

The U.S.is calling for an emergency session of the UN Security Council and the Human Rights Council in Geneva amid mass demonstrations in Iran, Washington's UN envoy said Tuesday. The people are crying out for freedom. "All freedom-loving people must stand with their cause", Nikki Haley told reporters at the UN's NY headquarters.

After she read out social media posts written by Iranians in support of the protests, Haley dismissed Iranian leaders' contention that the protests were designed by Iran's enemies.

"In these first days of 2018, nowhere is the urgency of peace, security and freedom being more tested than in Iran", she said. "Hundreds have been arrested", she said. "We all know that's complete nonsense", Haley said.

He also plans to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem from Tel Aviv. "We expect that the rights to peaceful assembly and expression of the Iranian people will be respected", Farhan Haq told reporters.

Here are the messages that they're chanting today: "All these brigades have come out to the streets".

Haley also said the United Nations must speak out in support of protesters in Iran where 21 people have died and at least 450 have reportedly been arrested during violent protests against the country's leadership.

"The worldwide community failed to do that in 2009", she added, referring to Iran's Green Revolution.

In the wake of Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital, a break with decades of U.S. policy, Palestinian officials have boycotted the USA as a mediator, canceling any meetings with United States envoys or diplomats.

The US was the only country in the 14 member body to vote against the measure.

Haley also spoke briefly about North Korea, calling United Nations resolutions "a great achievement" but emphasizing that work remains to ensure those resolutions are enforced.

"But in pursuing those things, Moon can not succumb to North Korean nuclear blackmail to weaken the South's military alliance with the United States - in the very same New Year's speech, Kim claimed to be able to hit the USA with a nuclear weapon".

"The civilized world must remain united and vigilant against the rogue state's development of a nuclear arsenal", Haley said.
