UAE has information Tunisian women may commit 'terrorist acts', Tunisia says

On Friday the Tunisian government said it had asked the UAE ambassador to clarify what was happening and had been told that the measures had been temporary and had already been lifted.

Tunisia bans UAE airlines from landing in its territory.

The build up to the suspended flights followed anger in Tunisia over repeated reports of Tunisian women being banned from boarding Emirate flights from Tunis to Dubai.

The condemnations came hours after a female Tunisian writer, Maha Jouini, was prevented from traveling on a UAE plane from Beirut to Beijing, China.

Tunisian MP Iyed Dahmani said that the decision was unacceptable and they were ready to take countermeasures.

On Sunday evening he said "security information" had caused the delays to the passengers' flights and that both countries were in contact about the measures. "In the UAE, where we are proud of our experience in empowering women, we appreciate Tunisian women, respect them and value their pioneering experience", the tweet read.

Tunisia has been trying to improve relations with the UAE that were damaged by its 2011 revolution.

But Tunisian official Garrach insisted that while his country could understand the UAE's concerns, it cannot "accept the way Tunisian women have been treated". He added: "The Tunisian woman has exposed their failings once again; suddenly many of them have become dumb and abandoned their pens, while human rights activists have suddenly disappeared".

In a statement on Friday, Tunisia's Ministry of Transport said that such actions are "illegal" and "contradictory to the regulations in force in global civil aviation".
