Facebook wants your face data-to benefit your privacy, of course

Facebook lets the person posting a photo have the final say this way in order to deal with situations like public speaking events, where the speaker shouldn't have control over what's shared.

According to Facebook, the facial recognition technology will work by analyzing the pixels in photos the user is already tagged in. Since new facial recognition technology is now being added to devices and applications everywhere - Apple's iPhone X is the ideal example here - it comes as no great surprise that Facebook would be next to incorporate some kind of facial scanning in its own platform.

Privacy experts argue that since Facebook is poised to beef up its facial recognition powers, it should also become more transparent about such decisions. Additionally, Facebook has also launched a new feature for visually impaired people.

"If you're in a photo and are part of the audience for that post, we'll notify you, even if you haven't been tagged", Mr. Candela said.

People gave us feedback that they would find it easier to manage face recognition through a simple setting, so we're pairing these tools with a single "on/off" control.

The latest feature from Facebook gives users options to tag themselves, remain untagged, or report the photo to Facebook.

The facial recognition technology, which uses artificially intelligent algorithms, doesn't appear to have changed much since Facebook began using it in 2010 to suggest the identities of people in photos.

To Facebook's credit, though, it's done at least one privacy-positive thing vis-a-vis facial recognition: in November 2015, the company said it was putting together a program to warn parents before they share photos of children publicly instead of just with friends. It then compares newly uploaded images to the template. Facebook wants to prevent people from impersonating others on the platform. Perhaps anticipating the criticism, the company also published a blog post titled "Hard Questions: Should I Be Afraid of Face Recognition Technology?" And because of a new face recognition service the social network is rolling out Tuesday, he can now learn which friends are in photos, even those who haven't been tagged by another user.
