Mike Pence delays Egypt, Israel trip 'over tax reform vote'

The US administration has denied claims that Pence's visit to the Middle East being delayed is linked to the massive protests in Palestine against Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

"Since the tax vote could possibly take place shortly before midnight on Wednesday, it was not practically possible for the Vice President to travel this week", said the White House official.

"The largest tax cut in American history is a landmark accomplishment for President Trump and a relief to millions of hardworking Americans", his office said in a statement.

Trump's decision countered an global consensus that Jerusalem's status should be decided in negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians, who claim east Jerusalem as the capital of their future state.

"The vice president is committed to seeing the tax cut through to the finish line", she added. Pence is postponing his trip to Egypt and Israel until the middle of January, citing an upcoming vote in the Senate to overhaul the nation's tax system. This was the Trump administration's first Security Council veto, and all 14 other members supported the resolution, underscoring the US isolation on the issue.

The itinerary had already seen several cancellations following Washington's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, but the White House attributed the rescheduling for domestic reasons. John McCain, R-Ariz., was returning to his home state for cancer treatment, leaving Republicans with only 51 votes for the tax bill. Abbas had originally planned to host Pence, a devout Christian, in the biblical West Bank town of Bethlehem. However, Pence's office confirmed on Monday that his visit would be pushed back again until January 2018, Politico reported.

Pence had also planned to address the Knesset, visit the Western Wall and meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas had also said he would not meet Pence during his trip.

The new date for the trip is January 14th, according to CNN.

Palestinian officials have pressured local church leaders to reject Pence's visit and follow the example of the Egyptian Coptic Church whose pope has refused to meet the U.S. vice president due to the decision.
