Is a Showdown Coming Between Trump and Mueller?

Opponents of special counsel Robert Mueller ramped up their attacks over the weekend with a new claim that he improperly collected thousands of emails from President Trump's transition team and is using them as an illegitimate basis for much of his investigation.

The letter says this was a violation of Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable search and seizure.

The GSA - which is responsible under law for providing the presidential transition with office space, supplies like phones and laptops, and "ptt.gov" emails - was instructed after the transition had ended and President Trump had taken office to preserve records from the transition in connection with ongoing investigations. This person reportedly said that the transition, which still exists in order to wind-down the operation, will send Special Counsel Robert Mueller a letter demanding investigators return the emails.

"I seriously doubt there is anything here to taint the [Mueller] investigation", said William Jeffress, a white-collar defense attorney who represented Vice President Dick Cheney's senior aide, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby, during the Valerie Plame CIA leak investigation.

The emails are from about a dozen of Trump's inner circle during the transition period.

. G.S.A. deputy counsel Lenny Loewentritt also told BuzzFeed Saturday that before using G.S.A. devices, the Trump transition team had been informed that materials "would not be held back in any law enforcement" actions; "therefore, no expectation of privacy can be assumed", he said. Beckler was "hospitalized and incapacitated" in August and died the following month.

Langhofer also accused GSA officials of giving Mueller "tens of thousands of emails" without giving the transition "any notice".

The latest complaint against Mueller comes amid a barrage of criticism from Trump allies that the special counsel investigation itself is tainted on multiple fronts.

Among the officials who used transition email accounts was former National Security Adviser Michael Flynn, who pleaded guilty to a count of making false statements to FBI agents in January and is now cooperating with Mueller's investigation.

The U.S. intelligence community has concluded that Russian President Vladimir Putin directed efforts to influence the presidential election campaign in ways that would help Trump and hurt his Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

Ken Nahigian, the Trump transition's executive director and trustee, said in an interview that GSA's decision to share the emails with Mueller's office would have a long-term detrimental effect for future transitions.

"'Private documents' on a US Government, public email system?"

The letter added that a warrant should have been obtained for such materials, and said it violated the Presidential Transition Act. Baloney. This is another attempt to discredit Mueller as his #TrumpRussia probe tightens.

"The reality is that this administration has complied in every single possible way with the special counsel, tax payers have spent millions and millions of dollars on this investigation that has not yet proven any sense of collusion with the Russians", Short said.
