Handy new Facebook feature lets you mute annoying friends

The company is slowly adapting to its responsibility in all of this, and wants to help by allowing you to temporarily unfollow or mute people and pages. Now, it's a simple one-tap decision - do you want to mute your pal Peter for 30 days... or not?

In their blog post, Facebook cites research that suggests "offline and online contact, including seeing an ex-partner's activities, can make emotional recovery more hard". Over the next week, we're launching Snooze, which will give you the option to temporarily unfollow a person, Page or group for 30 days.

You'll still be friends with that person or be a part of that group or Page, but any content they post won't show up in your timeline.

In case you change your mind about seeing their posts again, Facebook will notify you when the Snooze period is coming to an end.

You can also use the feature to mute specific groups.

Facebook said the new Snooze button is one way it is trying to make social media more positive by allowing users to hide the type of posts that they only passively consume, such as a distant friend's vacation pictures.

Chamath Palihapitiya, who left his role as VP for user growth in 2011, said: The short-term, dopamine-driven feedback loops that we have created are destroying how society works. Whether they're re-sharing countless videos or refuse to keep quiet during an election season, Facebook's got your back with a new snooze option. However, some researchers posited that reading about others over the Internet may compel them to compare themselves to others, thereby, getting a negative feeling about it.

You probably won't have noticed it yet but you can now find the button in the top-right drop-down menu of every post.
