Ukrainian president arrives in Lithuania

After he was freed, he urged the crowd to impeach Ukraine's President Petro Poroshenko, a former ally.

Scores of Mr. Saakashvili's supporters gathered overnight outside the detention center, which is operated by the domestic security agency, and chanted "glory to Ukraine" and other slogans.

Perceived backsliding on reform commitments, including delays in establishing an independent court to handle corruption cases, has held up billions of dollars in loans under Ukraine's $17.5 billion International Monetary Fund program.

The search of Saakashvili's home was conducted two days after his Movement of New Forces party organized a rally in Kyiv calling for Poroshenko's impeachment and for legislation that would allow it to take place.

"Ukraine needs to ensure the independence of the NABU in such a way that politicians can not influence the NABU's work". He also calls upon the worldwide organisations to follow the developments in Ukraine.

Ukrainian Prosecutor-General Yuriy Lutsenko says his office has evidence that Saakashvili's representative received $500,000 to finance protests from Ukrainian businessmen with ties to Russian Federation.

Poroshenko vowed Saakashvili would be given a fair trial.

Lagarde said she and Poroshenko had discussed the need to safeguard the independence of NABU and similar institutions and that they agreed on the urgency of establishing an anti-corruption court.

"If he flees from the investigation, this undermines his credibility", he added.

Poroshenko's visit to Lithuania comes at a time of increased tensions in Ukraine after law-enforcement authorities tried to arrest former Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili on charges of financial crimes, but he was freed by his supporters.

Law enforcement officers searched Saakashvili's apartment in Kyiv on December 5, dragged him off the roof, and bundled him into a vehicle.
